Victorian Elderly Chinese Welfare Society Inc. Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The Victorian Elderly Chinese Welfare Society Inc. is proud to mark its 40th anniversary, celebrating decades of service to the Chinese elderly community. I extend my heartfelt wishes for our continued success in improving services and supporting our members.

  1. Four Decades of Growth and Challenges

Founded in 1984 to advocate for elderly Chinese welfare, the association was built through the tireless efforts of community pioneers. Over the past 40 years, despite numerous challenges, we have grown steadily. A major milestone was the establishment of the Victorian Elderly Chinese Hostel in 1994, fulfilling our vision of providing comprehensive care for seniors. Although we’ve faced crises, our team’s dedication helped us overcome them, paving the way for today’s success.

  1. Our Mission and Progress

Our core mission is to:

  1. Advocate for elderly Chinese welfare and support their integration into Australian society.

  2. Promote Chinese culture as a bridge for Sino-Australian cultural exchange.

  3. Provide health, entertainment, and support services to ensure seniors enjoy a fulfilling retirement.

As a non-profit organization, we rely on government funding. However, due to policy changes in 2015, newly established centres no longer receive government support. This meant we had to become self-sustaining.

In response, we acquired two properties in Preston—305 High Street in 2012 and 359 High Street in 2015—to create a self-funded Preston Multicultural Activity Centre. This centre offers recreational and social activities for our members. However, unlike older centers, it operates without government funding, so members need to pay fees to keep it running.

Our association has come a long way thanks to the support of members, volunteers, and community leaders. As we move forward, we remain committed to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for the Chinese elderly.
